REFERENCE SOURCE:
Wappenbuch von 1605 by Johann Siebmacher
ARMS (Shield) INTERPRETATION:
Per Pale - (Means the Shield is divided in half vertically)
vert and gules - (Means the first half of the Shield is Green (Vert) & the second half is
Red (Gules))
the first charged with the stem and trunk of a tree sprouting out three branches couped
close of the latter - (Means a Red (Gules=Red - the last color) Tree Trunk with its 3
branches cut short (couped close) is placed vertically (its default orientation) on the (viewers left) half of the
Shield - Note that while putting Red upon Green breaks the "Tincture Rule" of Heraldry, this is not too uncommon in the Germanic Arms)
the second charged with - (Means the second half of the Shield is Red (Gules) & is to have
something (to be deScribed next) put (Charged) upon it)
a Knife paleways proper - (Means a Knife is to be placed vertically (Paleways) upon the
second (viewers right) half of the Shield and is to be colored using all of the available colors desired or required
and not just limited to the few "Heraldic" colors)
CREST (Helmet) INTERPRETATION:
On a Torse of the colors - (Means the next thing deScribed will go upon a
cloth wreath (Torse) of 6 twists, usually alternating between the primary tinctures, unless otherwise
deScribed. Note: in this case the Torse takes the colors of the Mantling, as they were specifically
deScribed (Red & Green))
A Vol - (Means a pair of uplifted wings that are conjoined at the base)
Per Fess - (Means the Vol is divided in half Horizontally (By the Fess
means Horiz.))
alternately gules and vert - (Means the top of the Wing to the viewers
left (Dexter) is colored Red (Gules) & the bottom half is colored Vert (Green)(Note: the 1st color
deScribed (for the Vol) was Gules (Red), so it receives the 1st (highest) precedence, which is
the "top" - the Wing to the viewers right (Sinister) is colored opposite of the first Wing))
charged with the Arms of the shield - (Means the Wings have the same devices
placed (charged) on them as the ones in the Shield). This Crest is then affixed by the Torse (together with the
Mantling) to the Helmet, which is drawn in Profile with no Visor & no Grilles - the kind used by a "Bürgerliche" (Esquire/Commoner/Citizen))
MANTLE: INTERPRETATION:
Gules and Vert - (Means the Mantling takes the Primary Color Tincture of Green (Vert) and the
secondary Color Tincture of Red (Gules) instead of the usual Primary Metal Tincture of Silver (Argent). Note: Mantling
is seldom deScribed, such as this, and usually takes the Primary Tinctures of the Shield as does the Torse.
SYMBOLISM:
Knife - (Justice and generous pursuit of honor and virtue in warlike deeds)
Log - (New life sprouting from the old)
Vol (Wings) - (Swiftness, protection, celebrity, or coverture)
Colors:
Gules (Red) - (Military fortitude and magnanimity)
Vert (Green) - (Hope, joy and sometimes loyalty in love)
Above Blazon (written description) only applies to large Emblazon (drawing).
