BLAZONING OF THE KERN COAT OF ARMS

BLAZON (Wappen der Familie Kern):
ARMS (Shield):
Azure between two mullets argent, a crescent of the last, all configured per bend sinister
CREST (Helmet):
On a torse of the colors a vol
MANTLE (Decken):
Not deScribed (Mantling is seldom deScribed and usually takes the Tinctures of the Shield)

MOTTO:
None recorded (It is rare for the German Achievement to deScribe a motto)

REFERENCE SOURCE:
Armorial General by J.B. Rietstap

ARMS (Shield) INTERPRETATION:
Azure - (Means the Shield is Blue (Azure = Blue))
Between 2 Mullets argent - (Means between 2 Silver (Argent=Silver) Stars (Mullet=star (of 5 points if not specifically deScribed otherwise))
a Crescent of the last - (Means a Siver (of the Last=Last color mentioned=Silver) Crescent)
all configured per Bend sinister - (Means the Stars are arranged diagonally (per Bend) but opposite (sinister) of "normal" - starting from the viewers top right (sinister) to left bottom with the Crescent in the middle)
So, we have a couple of Stars (Mullet(s) - (plural)) with a Crescent in the middle (all Silver) on a Blue Shield.
Note: we've also seen a Kern Blazon deScribing an Increscent (the Crescent rotated 90° ccw) in place of the Crescent.

CREST (Helmet) INTERPRETATION:
On a Torse of the colors - (Means the next thing deScribed will go upon a cloth wreath (Torse) of 6 twists, alternating between the primary tinctures)
A Vol - (Means a pair of upraised Wings conjoined at the base which may be colored either Silver or Blue (the primary colors) since no color was deScribed)
So, we have a pair of upraised Wings to be affixed by the Torse, together with the Mantling, to the Helmet which is drawn in Profile with the Visor closed or with No Visor & No Grilles - the kind used by a "Bürgerliche" (Esquire/Commoner/Citizen))

SYMBOLISM:
Crescent - (One who has been honored by the sovereign; hope of greater glory)
Star (Mullet) - (Divine quality from above; mark of cadency of the 3rd son)
Vol (Wings) - (Swiftness, protection, celebrity, or coverture)
Colors:
Argent (Silver) - (Peace and sincerity)
Azure (Blue) - (Loyalty and truth)
