Armorial General by J. B. Rietstap
ARMS (Shield) INTERPRETATION:
Gules - (Means the Shield is Red (Gules=Red))
issuing from a trimount argent - (Means "something" (to be deScribed later) will "come out from" (Issue) a Hill
or "Hillock" of 3 "humps" called a Trimount, which, in German Heraldry, is meant to suggest "Rolling Hills" - the Trimount is colored
Silver (Argent=Silver))
three acorns or - (Means the Shield has 3 Golden (Or=Gold) Acorns placed on it)
the stems and leaves vert, stems to base - (Means the Stems & Leaves are Green (Vert=Green) & the Stems point downward (to Base (bottom
third of Shield))) Note: One of the basic rules of Heraldry has been broken by the placing of the Green leaves on the Red Shield - low
CONTRAST, however, this is very common in the German achievement
CREST (Helmet) INTERPRETATION:
On a Torse of the colors - (Means the next thing deScribed will go upon a cloth wreath (Torse) of 6 twists, alternating
between the primary tinctures)
A Vol or - (Means a pair of Golden (Or=Gold), uplifted Wings conjoined at the base)
- this Vol is then affixed, by the Torse, together with the Mantling, to the Helmet,
which is drawn in Profile with the Visor closed or with No Visor nor Grilles - the kind used by a "Bürgerliche" (Esquire/Commoner/Citizen))
SYMBOLISM:
Acorn - (Antiquity and strength)
Oak (Leaves) - (Great age and strength)
Trimount - (Symbolism unknown - very common German device)
Vol (Wings) - (Swiftness, protection, celebrity, or coverture)
Colors:
Gules (Red) - (Military fortitude and magnanimity)
Or (Gold) - (Generosity)
Vert (Green) - (Hope, joy and sometimes loyalty in love)
